NOTES

GLOSS

Galya, a simple seamstress, comes to Moscow from Rostov-na-Donu, a coal-mining town of Shakhty in the Rostov Oblast near the Black Sea. She is pretty and bright, but a bit naive and disorganized, and she also dreams, like so many other girls of her age, of becoming a supermodel and seeing her photograph on the cover of the most fashionable glossy magazine. She doesn't want to work in a clothes factory and follow in her parents footsteps, especially as she is sure that thanks to her beauty she will triumph in the capital. When she meets the editor-in-chief of Beauty Magazine, she is told that she lacks the necessary natural beauty and sense of style to be a model and that she will never appear on the cover. But Galya finds a way and her photograph does indeed appear on the cover of a glossy magazine…

Director

Director Andrei Kochalovsky GLOSS
Profile Andrei Kochalovsky's (known earlier as Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky) Uncle Vanya (1970), is acclaimed as one of the best films in the Russian language. His award winning films, Romance for Lovers (1974) and Sibiriade (1979), made Konchalovsky a worldwide famous film director. His depiction of the lives of the people in Siberia brought him attention from American and European productions, and from there his career flourished on an international scope. Some of his English language works are Duet for One (1986) and Homer and Eddie (1989). Much to his fans disappointment, Konchalovsky moved to mainstream with Tango and Cash (1989), but he still insists that this work is no less laudable than any of his others. He also directed several theater productions, plays, operas, and television productions world-wide.
