NOTES
A TV drama “Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi” (Fuji TV in January 2008), which is Manabu Makime’s first work and masterpiece as well as a nominee for the Naoki Award, is finally made into a film! There is a mysterious battle called “Horumo”, which has been annually held in Kyoto in the last one thousand years. In this film, the director comically and steadily describes the university students that spend their youth participating in this battle with excitement!! Abe, whose appearance is not attractive, enters Kyoto University after spending two years as an examinee. One day he happens to meet a girl, Sawara with a beautiful nose at the welcome party for the freshmen of the university club “Kyodai Seiryu-kai”. He falls in love with her at first sight and carelessly joins the club. He thinks “Seiryu-kai” is just a university club, but it is actually connected with “Horumo” and covers up a dark secret that gives a shock to all the people in Kyoto.

| Message | Festivals have been something essential to Japanese for a long time. They believe in and imagine the gods, stirring their blood and making a lot of noise in front of the gods. Adolescence also makes them foolish. They are ignorant and unprincipled during adolescence. So I don’t want to remember my youth. This film describes the daily life of the foolish young men who are concerned with the gods in Kyoto. I will appreciate it if the people who are tired of “ke (which means ecularity)” enjoy the unique and comical scenes in this film and recall the feeling of “hare (which means sacredness).” | |
